What is a Chaffle?

A chaffle is a “cheese waffle”- it’s a great substitute for bread in any keto sandwich! I love chaffles because they are incredibly versatile and delicious. All you need to make them is a Mini Waffle Maker! You can use chaffles instead of bread, like on this Keto Turkey Club Sandwich, Chicken Bacon Ranch Chaffle or this Jalapeno Popper Burger. You can also make them for breakfast, like these Bacon Cheddar Chaffles, Sausage Jalapeno Chaffles or a Breakfast Chaffle Bowl.

Sweet chaffles are delicious, too! Some of my favorites are Cream Cheese Chaffles, Blueberry Chaffles or Cinnamon Roll Chaffles. Pepperoni Pizza Chaffles, Keto BBQ Stacks or Keto Chili Cheese Chaffles are some of my go-to recipes for a keto lunch. If you have a Waffle Bowl Maker, you can prepare a Chaffle Bowl to make these Taco Chaffle Bowls or a Keto Salad Bowl! Tips for the Best Tuna Melt

  • I really enjoyed the flavor of the Garlic Bread Chaffles, but if you want a taste that is more similar to traditional bread, try a Classic Keto Chaffle.
  • You can add a second chaffle to this sandwich, or you can leave it as an open faced sandwich. Whatever you prefer.
  • If you don’t like provolone, try cheddar, swiss or mozzarella!

Garlic Bread Chaffles

Chaffles are one of my favorite ways to enjoy keto bread- they’re super satisfying without breaking my keto diet. And since I knew I wanted to make this Spaghetti Squash Lasagna for dinner this week, I thought we would need some garlic bread to go with it! So I made these Keto Garlic Bread Chaffles. These chaffles are SO good- they’re a mix on my Basic Keto Chaffles.

You’re going to take a classic chaffle recipe and heavily season it so you really get an Italian taste. After you make the chaffles, you’re going to add garlic butter and cheese to the top and broil them (or use your Air Fryer) to get these Garlic Bread Chaffles perfectly cheesy and crispy!

These Keto Garlic Bread Chaffles are going to become your next go-to for an Italian night (for awesome dinner ideas, check out these Keto Italian Recipes!). They’re deliciously crispy, buttery and are seasoned perfectly so that you forget you’re eating a keto version of your favorite garlic bread!

Chaffles are a huge part of my keto diet- you can make them sweet or savory, so they’re great for whatever mood you’re in, and these Keto Garlic Bread Chaffles are no exception! You can make these ahead of time and freeze them, so you’ll always have a great low carb garlic bread on hand!

These Keto Garlic Bread Chaffles are perfect with a low-carb soup! For just 2.4 net carbs per chaffle, you'll want this cheesy, gluten-free garlic bread with every meal!

Ingredients in Keto Garlic Bread

As always, here is a quick overview of the ingredients used in our Keto Garlic Bread recipe. For the complete recipe, just scroll to the bottom of the page.

  • Eggs, mozzarella, almond flour
  • Baking powder, Italian seasoning
  • Grated garlic (or garlic powder), salt, pepper
  • Mozzarella, butter, garlic powder, Italian seasoning

How do I make this Cheesy Garlic Bread recipe?

This easy keto recipe is ready in only 3 simple steps!

  1. Mix together all of the chaffle ingredients. Melt your butter and combine with the Italian seasoning and garlic powder and set to the side.
  2. Fill up your warmed mini waffle maker 2/3 full with batter and allow the chaffle to cook until there is no longer steam coming from the waffle iron- about 3-5 minutes. Repeat with the rest of your batter.
  3. Brush the chaffles with the garlic butter mixture and top with remaining cheese. You can either broil, bake or Air Fryer your chaffles until the cheese is bubbly.

Can I freeze chaffles?

Yes, you can freeze these chaffles, but I would recommend doing so before you add the toppings. So when you go to reheat this recipe, you can warm in any of the ways listed below and then follow the steps to add the cheesy topping. Allow your chaffles to thaw (overnight in the fridge or about 30 minutes on the counter) before warming.

How do you reheat Chaffles?

I don’t recommend warming in the microwave- the chaffles will get soggy. You can warm your chaffles up in the following ways:

  • Air Fryer – This is the crispiest way; Heat to 300 degrees F and cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Waffle Maker – Preheat the waffle maker, pop the chaffle in, and close the maker for about a minute.
  • Toaster – Just like you would toast bread, place the chaffle in and let it toast for 30 seconds or so.
  • Oven/Toaster Oven – Warm oven to 350 degrees F and cook 4-5 minutes.
  • Stovetop – Heat a dry pan to medium and cook 1 minute on each side.

These Keto Garlic Bread Chaffles are perfect with a low-carb soup! For just 2.4 net carbs per chaffle, you'll want this cheesy, gluten-free garlic bread with every meal!

Tips for the Best Gluten Free Garlic Bread

  • Depending on how you like your garlic bread, you may want to just bake or Air Fry your chaffles instead of broiling them. If you broil them, your cheese will get bubbly and melty- it will also brown up, so if you prefer just bubbly cheese, I wouldn’t recommend broiling.
  • Don’t skip the extra step of adding the butter mixture to the chaffle- this gives it a ton of that signature Italian flavor you expect from garlic bread!
  • Add fresh herbs for a great topping! Parsley or basil would both be delicious with this keto bread

What should I serve with this Cheesy Garlic Bread?

This keto garlic bread could seriously go with anything. Some of my favorite are this Garlic Butter Chicken and Mushrooms, Stuffed Pork Tenderloin with Brussels Sprouts, Zucchini Lasagna or One Pan Lemon Parmesan Chicken. I also think these chaffles would really go well with Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin, Spinach and Feta Stuffed Chicken or Keto Chicken Parmesan.

Cinnamon Chaffles

I love Keto Cinnamon Rolls but sometimes my mornings just don’t allow me to make them. These flavorful Cinnamon Chaffles take a fraction of the time, and are just as satisfying! These indulgent chaffles are so easy to make and freeze very well, making them perfect for keto meal prep. They also only have about 2 net carbs, so you can enjoy a sweet meal guilt free!

These chaffles are full of flavor. The warm cinnamon makes every bite so delicious, and the sugar free cream cheese icing is the perfect topping. Your family will not believe how delicious these chaffles are, and you’ll never go back to store bought waffles! For more sweet chaffle ideas, check out Everything You Need to Know about Chaffles!

Ingredients for Cinnamon Roll Chaffles

As always, here is a quick overview of the ingredients used in our Cinnamon Chaffles. For the complete recipe, just scroll to the bottom of the page. For the Cinnamon Roll Chaffles:

  • Eggs, Almond flour, Baking powder, Keto sweetener, Vanilla extract, Cinnamon
  • Mozzarella, Cream cheese

How to make chaffles with cinnamon

First, preheat your waffle maker. Beat your eggs and add the rest of the ingredients- mix well. Spray your waffle maker with nonstick spray and add your mixture. I recommend filling until about 2/3rd of the way full, or about 1/8 of a cup. Cook until the steam stops coming out of the waffle maker- for me, this was about 5-6 minutes. Repeat with the remaining mixture. This does make a softer chaffle, but you can toast them or put them in the Air Fryer if you prefer a crispier texture.

For the icing, add your cream cheese, heavy cream and powdered swerve into a blender and blend until smooth. Next, combine the cinnamon and monkfruit. Top your cinnamon chaffle with the icing and the monkfruit mixture.

Do you taste the cheese?

No, you definitely do not taste the cheese. I know it sounds like an odd combo, but trust me! These chaffles are great! If you new to the world of chaffle this Basic Chaffle recipe is a great way to experiment. These are great eaten as traditional waffles, as bread for sandwiches, or make a great appetizer!

Do chaffles get crispy?

Savory chaffles, like Jalapeno Cheddar Chaffles, tend to crisp up as they cool. Since these cinnamon chaffles have more cream cheese than mozzarella, they stay softer than traditional chaffles. To make your low carb chaffles crispy, just pop into your toaster or Air Fryer!

What to serve with chaffles

These are the perfect breakfast for a buffet or whenever you have company. I served mine with these Keto Cinnamon Frappuccinos, but I also think a Keto Caramel Frappuccino would be so good with these. Serve with Air Fryer Sausage, Sausage Cheese Keto Egg Muffins, Easy Frittata or a Breakfast Chaffle Bowl!

Blueberry Chaffles

These Blueberry Chaffles are the perfect keto breakfast or keto dessert! These low carb waffles taste exactly like a blueberry waffle- your family won’t be able to tell the difference. By taking the recipe for a Basic Chaffle but reducing the amount of mozzarella for more cream cheese, you’ve got yourself a nice, soft chaffle. If you prefer a crispier texture, pop into the Air Fryer or toaster.

This recipe is perfect for keto meal prep- these are super easy to freeze and reheat, making your mornings a breeze. These chaffles are also a super kid friendly recipe- pop one into the toaster and add your toppings and you’ve got a happy breakfast table!

While you may traditionally think of these keto waffles as a breakfast food, I also love them for an indulgent keto dessert. For a fun topping, try this Keto Frosting, Sugar Free Strawberry Sauce or your favorite sugar free syrup. The best part? One of these chaffles is only 1.8 net carbs!

How to eat chaffles

If you’re new to a keto diet or you’re expanding your keto recipes, you may not be familiar with chaffles. Chaffles are “waffles” that are made with cheese- they are very low in carbs while still providing you with a good amount of fat. These Blueberry Chaffles would be delicious with so many things- I even loved them plain! They are delicious with the Keto Frosting I used for these Cinnamon Twists, but you could also top them with Sugar Free Syrup and butter.

Chaffles aren’t just for dessert! I love to make savory chaffles, like this Keto Turkey Club Sandwich. A few other favorites include Keto BBQ Stacks, Keto Chili Cheese Chaffles, or a Keto Bacon Cheeseburger. If you like spice, try this Keto Jalapeno Popper Burger. Basically just replace bread with a chaffle, and you’ve saved yourself a ton of carbs!

How to freeze chaffles

Allow the chaffles to completely cool off, then place them in a freezer bag (with parchment paper between each so they don’t stick together). These are best eaten within a month of being frozen, but they technically are fine for 6 months.

Are blueberries keto?

Blueberries are a great option for fruit on a keto diet! They are high in fiber while remaining low in carbs. They are also full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals! This only applies to fresh blueberries- dried berries tend to be high in sugar.

Keto Friendly Fruits

This recipe is fantastic for customizing to your personal tastes! Fruits like blackberries, raspberries, strawberries and kiwi can all be enjoyed on a keto diet, although in small amounts. Dried coconut is also a great option!

How do you make chaffles with cream cheese?

First, preheat your mini waffle maker. Once warmed up, spray with nonstick spray. Whisk your eggs, then add your shredded cheese, softened cream cheese, almond flour, baking powder, sweetener, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. Mix until the cream cheese is smoothly incorporated throughout. Fill the waffle maker 2/3rd full- this is a little over 1/8 cup. Be careful to not overfill. Allow to cook 4-6 minutes, or until the steam stops coming out of the machine.

How do chaffles get crispy?

Most savory chaffles (like these Pepperoni Pizza Chaffles) crisp up as you let them cool. Sweet chaffles have more cream cheese and less mozzarella, which makes them more soft. To make these sweet chaffles crispy, just place into the Air Fryer or your toaster.

How to use chaffles

Use these sweet chaffles as a breakfast waffle- top with keto whipped cream, sugar free chocolate chips or sugar free syrup. These could also be great at the base for a peanut butter sandwich, or a peanut butter and jelly. Use this recipe for a Basic Keto Chaffle for all sorts of things! What is a Chaffle?

A chaffle is a “cheese waffle,” or a waffle made using cheese. It’s a delicious invention that’s quick to cook and uses a small list of ingredients. In fact, a chaffle can technically be made with only cheese and eggs (although I do add two other ingredients for my own preferences… I’ll explain below)! This makes it an excellent keto option–Low in carbs with a good dose of fat.

Ingredients are mixed into a batter, then poured into a hot waffle iron. It only takes a few minutes to cook and can be frozen for later, making it perfect for meal prepping. Using a mini waffle maker, you can make chaffles to use in place of sandwich bread, burger buns, and more!

I add a bit of almond flour for structure and some baking powder so it gets fluffy like a normal waffle but remains easy and keto-friendly. The recipe is so customizable, too. You can add chopped meats to make it more filling, use different cheeses to change the flavor, even add cooked vegetables to add more nutrition! For me, a good basic keto chaffle recipe has become essential to sticking with my keto lifestyle. For more keto ideas, check out this list of Everything You Need to Know about Chaffles!

Chaffle Ingredients

  • Eggs — size large
  • Shredded cheese — Can be any variety or mixture
  • Almond flour — Adds structure so it’s a bit more like a bread substitute. If you’re nut-free, you can use a scant 2 tablespoons of coconut flour instead. Let batter sit for 5 minutes before cooking if using coconut flour.
  • Baking powder — Allows it to fluff up a bit more and not feel so dense

How to make chaffles

This recipe is just as easy as any basic waffle recipe! While your waffle maker is preheating, you’ll mix your eggs, cheese, almond flour, and baking soda together in a bowl until well combined. Once the waffle maker is ready, spray it with oil and fill it 3/4ths up with the batter. It’s important to not overfill as this will cause it to spill over and extend the cooking time.

Cook 2-3 minutes. When there is no longer steam coming from the waffle maker, you know it’s finished! If making chaffles for a crowd, preheat the oven or toaster oven to 200 degrees F and transfer your cooked chaffles there to stay warm while you finish cooking the rest of the batter.

Chaffles will not be crispy immediately out of the waffle maker. Let them sit a few minutes and allow them to crisp up if you prefer crispy waffles.

Where to buy a chaffle maker

You can make chaffles in any waffle maker, but I prefer this Dash Mini Waffle Maker. It’s the perfect size for sandwiches, and I have no problem with the chaffles sticking! This recipe makes 6 chaffles for this size–If you make larger chaffles, prepare to get fewer chaffles and have a longer cooking time.

How many carbs are in a chaffle?

This basic chaffle recipe has just 1.4 net carbs per chaffle. If you make larger ones or add different ingredients, you can expect that number to change.

How to eat chaffles

Chaffles are so versatile! For breakfast, you can top with butter and sugar-free syrup like you would a regular waffle. Or you could eat them plain (like you would toast) with a side of eggs and sausage. For an easy lunch, you could top them with chili for Chili Cheese Chaffles. You can use them in place of bread for a keto-friendly deli sandwich (like this Keto Turkey Club Sandwich–Under 5 net carbs!). You could even top them with marinara and pizza toppings for a keto lunchable or with smashed avocado or eggs for tasty breakfast chaffle toast! For an amazing, filling keto dinner, use two for a delicious Keto Bacon Cheeseburger instead of burger buns!

Can you freeze chaffles?

Yes, you can easily freeze chaffles. Allow the chaffles to completely cool off, then place them in a freezer bag (with parchment paper between each so they don’t stick together). These are best eaten within a month of being frozen, but they technically are fine for 6 months.

How to reheat chaffles

If chaffles are frozen, thaw them on the counter (about 30 minutes) or overnight in the fridge. You can reheat these in several different ways.

  • Microwave – Not ideal; the chaffles get very soggy.

Chaffle FAQs

Why is it called a chaffle?

It’s a “cheese waffle” with a focus on being low-carb with a good amount of fat and protein.

Do I have to use almond flour?

No, you can use 2 tablespoons of coconut flour, but add 5 minutes to your prep time. Coconut flour is super absorbent and needs extra time to get the right texture. Some people choose to use no flour or baking powder at all; that’s fine, it’s just super dense, eggy, and not a great bread substitute.

Can I make it dairy free?

I’ve not tried using any cheese substitutes in this recipe, so I’m not sure. I do think plant-based cheeses that melt okay would work, though.
