If you’ve spent much time on our website, you will know we love our cabbage recipes. There is a lot to love about cabbage. Cabbage recipes are some of our favorite comfort foods.

Another reason cabbage is so great is because of its health benefits. It is naturally low in carbohydrates and full of vitamins in minerals. Cabbage also helps decrease inflammation and improve digestion.

Health aside, this particular Cabbage Soup recipe is a personal favorite because it requires common, inexpensive pantry staples and provides 8 servings. We nearly always have the needed ingredients on hand. If not, they’re easy to find and budget-friendly.

The recipe is even more budget-friendly, considering it provides enough servings for multiple meals. This makes it perfect for meal prepping too. Utilize leftovers for lunch or dinner later in the week, or even freeze in smaller servings to serve up to 3 months later!

Why You Will Love This Recipe

  • Inexpensive. All of the ingredients are common, inexpensive items that you can easily find at your local grocery store without breaking the bank. This recipe also provides 8 servings so you will have plenty of leftovers!
  • Hearty. Packed full of vegetables, this soup is a filling dinner option. Cabbage is especially great with several health benefits, such as those discussed above. To make this recipe lower in calories, you could hold the bacon, although bacon does make everything better.
  • Easy. With a few simple steps, you can have this recipe on the table in about 30 minutes!

Recipe Ingredients

Here’s a quick overview of what you’ll need for this recipe. Keep scrolling down to the printable recipe card for the exact measurements.

  • Proteins: chopped ham and bacon (try pepper bacon if looking for a little more flavor with a hint of heat)
  • Vegetables: minced garlic, onion, celery, bell pepper, carrots, and of course cabbage.
  • Canned crushed tomatoes: for a little extra flavor, try fire-roasted canned tomatoes.
  • Beef broth: for the best flavor, choose a high-quality broth.
  • Spices: onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, and oregano.

How to Make Cabbage Soup

Aside from the ingredients listed above, you will need a Dutch oven or large pot, as well as a cutting board and knife. I’ve documented each step so you can easily make this at home! Follow this step-by-step guide to make this vegetable soup in about 30 minutes! Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the page for the exact measurements.

Cook the Bacon

overhead shot of bacon in dutch oven

Heat a Dutch oven or large pot to medium heat. Add the chopped bacon to the skillet, stirring occasionally until the bacon is crisp. Once the bacon is crisp, use a slotted spoon to remove the bacon from the pot and set aside on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.

Saute the Vegetables

Once the bacon has been cooked and removed from the pot pour off some of the bacon grease if desired. Leave at least 1 tablespoon in the skillet to saute the vegetables. Next,  add the garlic, onion, celery, bell pepper and carrots. Saute the vegetables, stirring occasionally, for 4-5 minutes. Remember, the vegetables continue to cook as the soup cooks so you do not need to cook them until they are totally soft.

Cook the Cabbage

Stir in the broth, crushed tomatoes, chopped cabbage, spices and ham. Allow the soup to simmer (not boil) for 10-15 minutes or until the cabbage has reached your desired consistency. Then stir the bacon into the soup, and add salt and pepper to taste.

What to Serve With Cabbage Soup

  • Keto Dinner Rolls– These keto dinner rolls are so perfectly soft and fluffy you would never guess they are low carb!

Storage and Reheating Instructions

  • Reheating Instructions: To reheat, my preferred choice is heating on low on the stovetop. Stirring intermittently. However, if you’re in a hurry, this recipe reheats well in the microwave. Reheat in 30-second increments until heated to your desired level. To reheat from frozen, allow to thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.
  • Refrigerator Storage: Allow to cool completely. Then, you can store this soup in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. We like to store leftovers in single serving containers so we can just grab and go!
  • Freezer Storage: This cabbage soup freezes well. After allowing to cool completely, freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. This recipe provides 8 servings so I usually store in multiple containers so we don’t have to thaw it all at once.

Tips and Tricks

  • Add some kick with pepper bacon or cayenne pepper. Pepper bacon is my personal favorite.
  • Personalize this soup with your preference of protein and/or vegetables. Add pulled pork, beef chunks, extra vegetables, or even potatoes just to name a few ideas!
  • Easily make this a vegetarian dish. Substitute the beef broth with vegetable broth and hold the bacon and ham. You will also need to use some olive oil (any neutral oil) to saute the vegetables.

Tips for the best Cabbage and Sausage Soup

  • To make this recipe even faster, prep everything before hand! Chop up your sausage and veggies so that when you’re ready to cook, all you need to do is pop everything into your dutch oven!
  • If you only have a large pot, that will work fine for this recipe. You may have to brown your sausage in stages, so that you can be sure you’re getting a good browning on all sides.
  • If you wanted to use a different type of sausage, that would work fine! I also think this recipe would be good with ground beef or pork.

What should I serve with Sausage Soup?

One of the wonderful things about this soup is that it’s so filling- the large amount of veggies and protein will do that! But if you wanted to add some sides, I think Cheddar Garlic Keto Biscuits or Rosemary Garlic Keto Dinner Rolls would be delicious, but check out my list of Keto Bread Recipes for more yummy low carb bread recipes! You could also add a Keto Soup Topper to your sausage soup!

How to Store and Reheat Soup

To store this soup, allow to cool and transfer to a plastic or glass container with an airtight lid and store in the fridge. This soup will stay fresh for up to five days. To reheat, you can either microwave in 30 second increments until hot enough for you, or on low heat on the stovetop.

Can I freeze this Cabbage and Sausage Soup?

Yes, you can! Allow this soup to cool completely and add to a freezer bag- I recommend using these bag rack holders to make the process much smoother. Lay on a sheet pan and allow the bags to freeze laying flat, so the bags will be easier to store. Once frozen, remove from the sheet pan. To heat from frozen, allow to thaw in the fridge overnight and then warm on the stove top. Do not refreeze.

Ingredients Needed for Cajun Chicken Cabbage Skillet

As always, this is a quick overview of the ingredients you will need to make this keto skillet dinner. For the complete recipe and instructions just scroll down.

  • Chicken: I used chicken breast but you can use another cut such as boneless thighs. Simply cut the chicken into bite sized chunks for this recipe.
  • Smoked sausage: you can also use andouille sausage or kielbasa, just watch the carb count.
  • Butter: I used salted butter for this recipe.
  • Garlic: freshly minced garlic.
  • Cabbage: Freshly chopped cabbage, you can use green or purple or a mixture.
  • Cajun seasoning: OR your favorite all purpose seasoning.

How to Make Cabbage and Chicken Skillet Recipe

This really is a quick and easy keto dinner with very few ingredients!

  1. Start by tossing the chopped chicken with the Cajun seasoning and browning over medium heat. Next, add the smoked sausage.
  2. When your sausage is browned and slightly crisp, remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Without rinsing or washing your pan add one tablespoon of butter, two cloves of garlic and 4 cups of chopped cabbage.
  4. Fry the cabbage, stirring occasionally over medium heat until it reaches your desired tenderness.
  5. The final step is to add the cooked Cajun chicken and smoked sausage back into the skillet and stir. Add salt and pepper to taste.

What Type of Sausage Should I Use?

You can make this cabbage meal with any sausage you like! Kielbasa and cabbage, andouille and cabbage, or another favorite will all work. If following a keto diet just choose a low carb variety. Sometimes smoked sausage can have hidden sugar, so check the nutrition.

Tips for Making Fried Cabbage and Sausage

  • The exact amount of time needed to sauté the cabbage will depend on how crisp you like it. If you like your cabbage to have a crunch, this will take 5-6 minutes. But if you want your cabbage to be very tender, the cooking time will be closer to 10 minutes.
  • Most fried cabbage recipes call for chopped onion, but mine doesn’t. However, you can add 1/2 cup of chopped onion when you add the garlic if you wish — but it does increase the carbs.
  • This recipe is best fresh, but leftovers reheat well since cabbage is fairly hearty.

A healthy one pan meal your family will adore, this Cajun Chicken Sausage and Cabbage Skillet will be on your table in less than 3o minutes! Keto friendly and loved by all ages, this meal will disappear almost as quickly as it came together!

How should I store and reheat leftovers?

Like I said, this is best eaten fresh, but you can enjoy leftovers as well! The best way to reheat is to toss leftovers back into a hot skillet and sauté for a couple minutes until the chicken and sausage are warmed throughout. You could also microwave in 30-second intervals if you’re in a rush!

This Fried Cabbage with Bacon is the perfect keto, low carb side dish! At just 3.9 net carbs per serving this one pan side dish will be your new favorite!

When I transitioned to a low-carb lifestyle, I had a pretty hard time finding side dishes that were keto-friendly. At first glance, so many traditional side dishes — such as baked potatoes, fries, chips, pasta salads and even some vegetable-based sides — were no longer an option.

So what is left? Just salads? That’s what I thought at first too. But truthfully there are so many more low-carb side dishes out there!

This Southern fried cabbage with bacon is a quick and easy keto side dish that is naturally low carb. You don’t need to have any hard to find ingredients with this dish, just a few very basic ingredients gives you the perfect keto comfort food!

Ingredients for Fried Cabbage with Bacon

Pan fried cabbage is one of my favorite keto sides because it requires so few ingredients. Here’s all that goes into the fried cabbage with bacon and onions:

  • Cabbage
  • Onion
  • Bacon
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Paprika
  • Bacon

What Kind of Cabbage Should I Use?

I used a head of green cabbage for this recipe. Don’t use purple cabbage as it has a slightly different taste and texture.

What Kind of Bacon Should I Use?

Use any bacon you’d like! I used a classic pork bacon, but you may use your favorite type.

This Fried Cabbage with Bacon is the perfect keto, low carb side dish! At just 3.9 net carbs per serving this one pan side dish will be your new favorite!

How to Make Fried Cabbage with Bacon

This is one of my favorite low-carb side dishes! It’s so easy to make, and it’s packed with flavor.

Here’s an overview of how this simple keto side dish recipe is made:

  1. Heat a large skillet to medium heat, add the chopped bacon and cook until crisp.
  2. When crisp, remove the bacon from the skillet with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate.
  3. Drain off all of the bacon grease except 1 tablespoon and set aside for later.
  4. Add the chopped onion to the bacon grease and sauté until caramelized.
  5. Add 1 tablespoon of bacon grease back to the skillet, then add the cabbage salt, pepper and paprika.
  6. Cook the cabbage until it has reduced and is tender enough for your liking.
  7. Add the chopped bacon and serve immediately.

Is Fried Cabbage Keto-Friendly?

Yes! Cabbage is a staple in my keto diet. It is naturally low in carbs and can be prepared so many ways.

This keto fried cabbage recipe makes four servings, approximately 3/4 cup each. However, if you like your cabbage super tender and cook it until it reduces greatly, the serving size will be smaller.

Per serving this recipe has 14 grams of fat, and 3.9 net carbs per serving

This Fried Cabbage with Bacon is the perfect keto, low carb side dish! At just 3.9 net carbs per serving this one pan side dish will be your new favorite!

What to Serve with Fried Cabbage

Fried cabbage is a traditional southern side dish. While it can be served with just about anything, it pairs especially well with bold flavors like Blackened Chicken.

Some other recipes that go well with pan fried cabbage and bacon are:

More Easy Keto Sides:

When adapting to a low carb diet it can be difficult to give up those old favorites! I’ve tried my best to come up with some keto friendly sides that mimic classic side dishes.

These Crispy Keto Zucchini Fries are one of my favorites! Zucchini is cut into fry shapes and then breaded in an almond flour parmesan breading that has a hint of ranch to it. It goes great with everything!

Another keto side dish that we love are these Keto Zucchini Breadsticks. If you love cheesy bread this recipe is for you! Served with low carb marinara it satisfies those pizza cravings! It also works great as a low carb appetizer.

It is ready in about 30 minutes and I think the left overs are even better so it works well for keto meal prep.

Is Cabbage Keto?

Cabbage is naturally low carb and relatively high in fiber. One cup of chopped cabbage has about 2 net carbs. This is an excellent vegetable to add to your low carb lifestyle because it fits within your carb count and can be prepared many different ways. You can remove the leaves and stuff like traditional cabbage rolls, or this is how I make low carb enchiladas (recipe coming soon)

It also makes a great filler for casserole recipes like this because it bulks up the dish and makes it more filling while adding additional nutrition. I love this Cabbage Soup for a hearty dinner that can feed a crowd. And for breakfast this low carb breakfast hash , the cabbage works as a potato substitute for a filling breakfast!

This Bacon Cheeseburger Cabbage Casserole is the perfect low carb and keto friendly casserole! This dish is backed with ground beef, crispy bacon, sharp cheddar cheese and tender cabbage! At just 5 net carbs per serving this is the perfect keto comfort food!

What are some other low carb casseroles?

One of the hardest things about staying on track with keto is that your “go to” recipes are probably off limits, such as pastas, pizzas and other carbful dishes. Don’t worry, I have new “go to” keto recipes that you will love and tons of them can be made in just one pan and in under 30 minutes.

This Instant Pot Sausage and Cabbage Casserole is an excellent low carb dinner, at about 5 net carbs per serving this is the perfect keto comfort food!

One of the most popular recipes on this website is this Low Carb Cheesy Cabbage Casserole. It is one of my favorites too! I think what has made this one a standout is that it has really basic ingredients, is made quickly and has a lot of the markers of traditional “comfort food”.

I wanted to create a new version for the Instant Pot and this fits the bill perfectly! Instead of ground beef I used smoked sausage but the cabbage and spices remained the same. You won’t believe how quicky this comes together!

What ingredients do you need for Instant Pot Sausage and Cabbage Casserole?

As I mentioned this recipe has no strange or hard to find ingredients. For the most part, the majority of the recipe has pantry staples that you probably keep on hand. The ingredients you will need are:

  • Smoked Sausage
  • Garlic
  • Cabbage
  • Canned tomatoes with green chilies
  • Tomato sauce
  • Spices: chili powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper
  • Shredded cheese

How do you make Instant Pot Cabbage Casserole?

As written, this is an Instant Pot recipe, however it can be made in the skillet if you do not have an Instant Pot. I have included instructions for both below:

Instant Pot Instructions:

  1. Turn on the saute function on the Instant Pot. Spray the bottom of the pan with cooking spray or add 1/2 tablespoon olive oil. Add the minced garlic and smoked sausage, brown over medium heat until sausage is lightly browned.
  2.  Turn the saute function off.
  3. Add the cabbage and spices, stir well.
  4. Add the tomato sauce and canned tomatoes, do not stir.
  5. Place lid on Instant Pot and seal the vent. Set the pressure cooker to 3 minutes.
  6. Manually release the pressure when done. Remove lid and top with shredded cheese.

Skillet Instructions:

  1. In a medium size skillet add the minced garlic and  brown the smoked sausage over medium heat.
  2. Add the cabbage, tomatoes with green chili, tomato sauce, spices and stir well.
Cover and reduce heat to medium cooking for 15-18 minutes stirring occasionally.
  3. Top with cheese, cover for a few minutes and allow it to melt.

This Instant Pot Sausage and Cabbage Casserole is an excellent low carb dinner, at about 5 net carbs per serving this is the perfect keto comfort food!

What are some other easy Instant Pot Keto Recipes?

While you can find all of my keto recipes by searching the recipe index I thought you might want to know what other easy low carb recipes you can make with the Instant Pot.

My go to Instant Pot recipe is this Cheesy Buffalo Chicken Soup. It is loaded with shredded chicken, peppers and celery in a creamy cheesy soup. I add additional buffalo sauce because I love a bit of spice, but if you have kiddos you can skip that and just have a cheesy chicken soup.

This low carb Instant Pot Buffalo Chicken Soup is loaded with tender shredded chicken, spicy buffalo sauce and tons of cheese! Under 5 net carbs per serving and perfect for keto meal prep! #keto

Another favorite is this Instant Pot Pizza Soup, it has everything you love about a supreme pizza but in soup form. Imagine Italian sausage, tender mushrooms, bell pepper and spinach in a creamy Italian style broth. I top my soup with loads of shredded mozzarella and fresh basil. This also reheats super well so it is great for keto meal prep.

This Keto Cabbage and Sausage Hash is an incredibly hearty low-carb, high-protein breakfast! At under 5 net carbs per serving, this dish takes similar to a traditional breakfast hash without the carbs!

My cousin, Katie, has been following a keto diet. She text me recently and said if she say another egg she thought she would die. Girlfriend, I’m with ya! I have hit those roadblocks where I just cannot eat any more eggs or cheese.

Usually, the only way to shake it is to try them a new and different way. This very easy Keto Sausage and Cabbage Breakfast Hash was just what I needed to get out of my funk with eggs. This resembles a traditional potato hash surprisingly well!

A traditional breakfast hash typically features potatoes, onions, and peppers all fried until crispy and then topped with fried eggs.

However, this cabbage and smoked sausage hash features a bed of smoked sausage and fried cabbage topped with eggs. It is hearty, inexpensive and easy! This is the perfect keto breakfast, or even to serve as an easy dinner!

Ingredients in Fried Cabbage and Sausage Hash

To make this low-carb, high-protein breakfast hash, you’ll need:

  • Smoked sausage
  • Butter
  • Garlic
  • Cabbage
  • Salt and pepper
  • Onion powder
  • Paprika
  • Eggs

How to Make Fried Cabbage and Sausage Hash

This is a quick keto breakfast recipe that you can have on the table in no time! Here’s a look at how this sausage and cabbage breakfast hash is made:

  1. Heat an oiled 12-inch skillet over medium heat.
  2. Brown the sliced smoked sausage until lightly crisp. Remove sausage from skillet and set aside.
  3. Add butter, garlic, chopped cabbage, and spices and stir well. Fry cabbage to your desired tenderness.
  4. When the cabbage reaches your desired texture, add the cooked sausage and stir until heated through.
  5. In another skillet, cook the eggs the way you prefer.
  6. Top the Keto sausage hash with the egg. Serve immediately.

What Type of Sausage Should I Use?

Any kind you’d like! Any cooked, smoked sausage will work.

Tips for Making a Keto Breakfast Hash

  • If you would like more crunch, cook the cabbage for about 3-4 minutes. If you like your cabbage very tender, it will need to cook closer to 10 minutes.
  • I prefer using my cast iron skillet to make this cabbage and sausage hash. It distributes heat evenly, so I rarely burn anything when I use it.
  • This keto breakfast hash is best enjoyed right away. However, leftovers can be reheated on the stovetop. I recommend cooking the eggs fresh each time you reheat the cabbage hash mixture.

More Keto Breakfasts to Try:

If you guys are like me you might like an example of what a complete keto meal looks like. So here are some ideas of what a keto breakfast under 7 net carbs might be:

  1. One heaping serving of this Keto Sausage Breakfast Hash
  2. Keto Mocha Frappuccino and three Keto Sausage Egg and Cheese Bites = just under 7 net carbs
  3. Keto Coffee Frappuccino, two Keto Sausage Cream Cheese Rolls and one hard boiled egg = roughly 6 net carbs
  4. Four Keto Almond Flour Sausage Balls and two scrambled eggs and an 8 ounce glass of unsweetened almond milk = roughly 5 net carbs
  5. Steak and Eggs and black coffee = roughly 2 net carbs
  6. Two BLT Lettuce Wraps and an Almond Butter Frappuccino = 7 net carbs
  7. Two Keto Cinnamon Rolls (seriously!!!) two slices of bacon and one egg over easy = under 5 net carbs
  8. Two Keto Ham and Cheese Muffins with a Coffee Frappuccino =under 7 net carbs

I hope that is as helpful for you as it is for me! I find it really hard to visualize such small carb amounts because we are so used to seeing breakfast options being high in carbs like cereals and pastries.

However, you can definitely have a filling keto breakfast under 7 net carbs if you choose your carbs wisely!
